The alternative to Rejsekort as an app

During 2026, Rejsekort & Rejseplanen A/S, together with the transport companies, will give travellers the opportunity to check in and out at a new type of card reader as an alternative for those who cannot use Rejsekort as an app.

It must be possible for Danes to buy a ticket for public transport at any time. We know there are travellers who either don't have a smartphone, are digitally insecure or want 100% anonymity, and they can't use apps. This is who the new ticketing solution is designed for, so that they can also buy a ticket when we phase out Rejsekort as a card in 2026.

Approximately 10% of those who currently use Rejsekort as a card either do not have a smartphone, are digitally insecure or want 100% anonymity.

In order to meet the needs and wishes of these users, we have conducted a number of different user surveys and been in dialogue with civil society organisations. We are therefore aware of what users are looking for.

The vast majority of travellers demand digital products, which is why these will be our primary ticket products. Today we offer:

  • Rejsekort as an app: Now it's even easier to travel by public transport throughout the country. With Rejsekort as an app, you always have your Rejsekort at hand.
  • Rejsebillet app: Easily and simply buy a digital ticket in advance for a predetermined journey.

The plan is for Public Transport Operators to install card readers in 2025 and 2026, and by 2026 the new ticketing solution will be rolled out throughout Denmark.

For some, the transition from a physical plastic card to an app can be quite an upheaval - and may prove impossible.

Our customer surveys show that approximately 10% of those who currently use Rejsekort as a card cannot use Rejsekort as an app for various reasons. They need a different offer, and this is the group we are now working on a ticketing solution for.

Until 2026, travellers can check in and out with Rejsekort as a card.

The current Rejsekortsystem is reaching the end of its technological lifespan, the blue points are maintenance-intensive and will eventually be phased out.
The price will follow the regular tariffs, so it will be the same.

From the beginning, it has been a prerequisite for the project with the development of Rejsekort as an app to create new, inclusive ticket types in parallel to embrace all current Rejsekort customers.

In the autumn of 2022, we began with an early study of user needs by visiting and interviewing a number of associations and organisations, and we have also received external help for an anthropological study

We have established a forum for digital inclusion on the go to ensure ongoing insight into user needs. Associations and organisations, KL and the Libraries' Network for Digital Inclusion participate here along with representatives from Public Transport Operators to ensure mutual knowledge sharing and collaboration on the successful implementation of the new Rejsekort solutions.

Specifically, we have regularly presented our approaches and plans to the participants in the ‘Forum for Digital Inclusion on the Move’ and received their positive feedback.

It is Public Transport Operators that decide how many card readers and where to place them at stations, in buses, at light rail stations etc. Right now it looks like there will be around 9000 card readers in Denmark.
